Vegan Superpowers: Why PETA Thinks You Should Go Veg

After seeing this ad that PETA posted for Valentine’s Day, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that PETA does not speak for the entire vegetarian community. I’m going to leave aside the question of whether the ad glorifies domestic violence, for now, and focus on their  other shady advertising techniques, namely truth-bending.

While it is true that yes, since I stopped eating meat I have been conferred with a variety of superhuman powers, including unnatural strength, agility, and the ability to annoy endlessly, this is not why you should become vegetarian. Or rather, you shouldn’t listen to PETA’s rhetoric that eating vegan always equates with being healthy. Puh-lease. Need I remind you that potato chips, soda and Oreos are all vegan? If a higher proportion of vegans are healthy compared to your average meat-eating American, that’s because most Americans eat crap. Trust me, just cutting meat, dairy and eggs out of your diet, without also eating more vegetables, exercising now and then, and eating less overall, will not turn you into some kind of superhuman sex god. Sorry to disappoint.

PETA’s ad is appealing to the lowest common denominator, people who will accept the words of a two-minute ad at face value. PETA doesn’t care who it converts, as long as more people become vegetarian and vegan. While their end goal is noble, I guess, I can’t approve of their methods. I’m here to stick up for the idiots. Remember, kids: to improve your endurance, follow Michael Pollan’s advice – Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. And please, don’t listen to PETA.

I read the post and all I can say is that Pollan sounds smug and she sounds smug when she quotes him,
Bob wants to add that he likes what she says but he still thinks babies are delicious!

    But… meat is good.

I have to tell you, as a vegetarian in the 80’s, PETA got under my skin so badly that I think they turned me off of making the extra effort to go vegan (George Cave lived here in town and he was a real ass every time I talked to him). So glad you could post this.

Thanks. Yeah, people taking things to crazy extremes are always irritating. What was George Cave like?

In a word, rude. I was a young woman trying to find Cruelty Free cosmetics and upon I asking him for any ideas for resources he started lecturing me on how “real animal right’s activists” didn’t wear make up.He was no help at all. PETA has a long and strange history, for certain.
